A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

You're right - those springs are sloppy and they'll make a noise. Here's one way to fix it:

http://www.theflyingbanana.com/clutchhub.htm

There's a thread on here somwhere where somebody twisted the springs 'longer' with a screwdriver and that worked as well.

Oh - and there's a tab washer you bend over to make sure that nut doesn't come undone.

Here Guys, I have just taken the clutch apart and removed the basket here is a short video of the backing plate and springs, presumably you should not be able to rotate the springs Clutch video . When I reassemble the clutch how do you guys stop the centre nut coming loose do you use thread lock

I'm not sure what you would use on the nut, hopefully others will chime in,
but here's the nut you should use.

And the linK for it.

If you want to permanently fix the problem, send the clutch basket to GRC (http://www.grccranks.com/ to have a Falicon heavy duty clutch kit installed. That + the heavy duty clutch hub nut from APE and you'll never have a rattling GS1000 clutch again.

That's to be a brilliant job done on the clutch, the only problem is I am in the UK and the postage would be an absolute killer. I will check out to see if there is anybody in this country to do the mods but to be honest there are not alot of options. Just another question I checked out the flying banana link and it mentions tig welding the rivets on reassembly would mig welding be sufficient as I know someone who mig welds.

Just an update have located a suzuki tuning shop in the UK and have sent the GS1000 clutch basket away to have the heavy duty Falicon billet backing plate and heavy duty springs and rivets fitted. Now need to locate somewhere that sells the APE heavy duty nut and washer, clutch cover gasket and generator cover gasket if anyone could help please.

Yeah, but he's a Brit

Hey, GS79! It's helpful if you put your geographical location so we can dial you in to the proper suppliers/help

Brilliant tips thank you, I usually end up buying my GS parts from the US due to lack of availability here in the UK. Will certainly give Robinsons Foundry a try. Just for info I contacted Ape and unfortunately they don,t do the HD clutch nut for the GS1000E 1980 model so I will have to give the original stock nut ago when I get the rebuilt clutch back.

Just while I am waiting for the rebuilt clutch to comeback I though I would just checkout the rota/starter clutch assembly. I am not sure if there should be any movement in the starter clutch ring but I can move it laterally a millimetre, have included two short videos (video 1 and video 2 )for you to see and would appreciate your advice if this movement is okay

I've got one of their HD clutch nuts on my 80 GS1000E. ;) :-\\\

UM! very odd, here is APE's reply

"I don't think the nut we make for the GS1100 will fit your bike. Sorry.

The OEM part number for the nut you need shows it only fits the shaft drive model of the GS1100 which we know is different from the chain drive model. "
