Hi Everyone,

It's time for new chain and sprockets so i'm going to be putting on a 520 chain. After hours of searching and cross referencing I think I've found out my combination but would like to post here to confirm compatibility. This is the best price i've found for this combination of parts:

http://www.indysuperbike.com/Isb1/Vortex_Chain_and_Sprocket_Kit__520_Conversion_Kit-p-1000000.html

I'm going with the silver sprocket and the RK 520GXW silver chain.

The gearing i'm going to be using is 17/47. Stock is a 2.8 ratio from what I've read here. I don't currently have access to the bike so i cannot check.

Anyway as far as cross-referencing parts i should be able to use this one:

http://www.indysuperbike.com/Isb1/V...1200_520_Chain__Vortex_Sprocket-p-113277.html

According to JT's website any bandit from year 1997 to 2005 has the same bolt pattern and size as shown here:

My 1983 1100:

The 1997 - 2005 GSF 1200 Bandit:

My other question is about the front sprocket. Indysuperbike seems to only list newer models of bikes. (late 90's and up) Does the bandit 1200 from 97-05 use the same front sprocket as the 83 gs 1100 esd?

Do you guys see any problems with my setup? I think i may also have to get a spacer for the front sprocket, from what I've read. Any other suggestions on where to purchase from?

Thanks,
Nick

Nick,

I would suggest calling Jeff at Z1 Enterprises. He has the knowledge and parts to hook you up right. His prices are very good and his shipping is unbelievably quick.

Thanks,
Joe

+1 on talking to Jeff at Z1.

I changed my 750's chain to a 530 with advice from here and with a couple calls to Z1. Jeff corrected a mistake I had made and together we figured out why my front sprocket didn't "look" right when he described what I should have seen.

also if you read Turtleface's thread you find out the answer to a mysterious spacer paradox.

Why can't you bottom the nut on the shaft with some lock-tite and let the front sprocket float on the splines?

I'm no expert but I would imagine if the sprocket was allowed to "float" it would cause the hole drive train to fail prematurely. With the sprocket not being fixed in place, it would not be able to maintain a straight chain line, and so the chain, and the teeth of the front and rear sprocket will wear down in no time. I would also imagine that it's movement from side to side would wear down the splines on the shaft that the front sprocket fits over. Again, I'm no expert but this is what my common sense is telling me. Why not just get the 6mm spacer? It's like a dollar or something.

I picked up my parts from Indysuperbike.com I got 17 tooth vortex front sprocket, 47 tooth aluminum vortex rear sprocket, and an RK 520 GXW Chain for $156 shipped. I think I did good.

I did the chain conversion on all my bikes. You need to get that 6mm spacer. Don't want the sprocket to wobble on the spline.

but which side of the sprocket did you put the spacer on? Inside or Outside?

A 520 chain is narrower than a 530 so unless you are running a wheel conversion in the back and need the clearance, it's better to go with 530 since chain and sprocket life will be better.

On the '80 1100E and the '78 1000E, the spacer goes outside the sprocket.

On the '80 1100L model, the spacer is installed on the inside.

I illustrated the differences last year when I did the conversion on my cruiser. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=139916

Tom LOL that is funny, I think I'm talking about the spacer that goes with the 530 conversion and not the stock one. I now remember the iss ues you were having .

True - the 520 is 1/8th inch narrower than the 530. My brother converted his CBR 900 a few years ago and he went with an aluminum rear sprocket. It seems to be holding up just fine.

I got the largest sprockets I could get with the similar ratio so that the load was distributed over more teeth at a time.

So am I. The 6mm spacer required for the 530 chain conversion is placed as I said previously.

However, the point is irrelevant to this thread as our friend Nicholaschase29 is doing a 520 chain conversion. I have no experience with this modification. I would guess a spacer is still required. Size and placement is unknown to me.

It would probably have to be 1/8 of an inch plus 6mm.. I have till spring to get it straight.

They came!

.... Now i just have to wait until spring..

I saw the shoulder and the way the spacer fit the GS1100E OEM sprocket; funny they made the part to reverse on the L.

Interesting Posplayer,

The measurement with the lip and sprocket is .350 inches. Just the width of the sprocket without the extruded part is .233 inches - a difference of .127 inches.

2.54 cm in an inch

2.54cm*.127= .32 cm...

I think the extra extrusion on this sprocket is just so the splines have more length to grab between the shaft and sprocket.....?
