    Valve adjustment



    Finally getting somewhere. Going over all the 16 valves. Many, if not all of them, were tight. Which is not uncommon I suppose. Now they are all in spec. .10 mm slides under, .15 mm doesnt.



    I couldnt find those square-headed wood screws here in Sweden (didnt look very hard for it either) but had this lying around. Two screws and a nut make up a perfectly fitting valve adjustment tool



    Also, the sprocket is now properly fastened and torqued down with a brand new OEM nut and washer

    I did start her up for the first time since Sept/Oct or so, will see if I can manage to get that video out of my phone and onto the internetz.

    There is hope of taking her out for a first spin for the season later today

      I remember my valve adjustment for my "T". A leaking oil pan problem was my next task which resulted in new exhaust system and shocks.

        An new chain got put on two days ago. No kinking/binding links made a change for the better for sure, got rid of some disturbing vibrations at lower speeds.
        Bought a used Laser 4-1 yesterday which I hope to fit tonight. The end part/muffler is only like 2½" or so in diameter, so I wonder how loud its gonna be... Already started removing the original exhaust yesterday and I was anticipating a struggle with the header bolts, but they came lose with almost no force. PO had done a good job there with anti seize
        I've got a set of K&N filters lined up as well, so its time to start fiddling around with the carbs, finding the right mains first and then on to needle height etc etc

        I know this post is worthless without pics, but they will come.

          New gasket under clutch cover -> no more oil leak here.

          The old one gave up suddenly, one morning there was a puddle on the garage floor. New stator cover gasket -> got rid of another oil leak, but still my left boot gets wet from oil. Replaced the oil seal for the shift rod which hopefully cures the wet left boot.

          Unfortunately I messed up during removal or installation. The shifter does not spring back nor does it select any gears. Can I get to it without removing the entire clutch basket?

            Clutch has been almost fully blown apart in order to get that gear shifter back to where it should be, all that remains is to tighten the six bolts for the pressure plate. I hear you need to be real careful not to overtighten and break them? After that, just wait for the new clutch cover gasket so I can button things back up and chase down the next oil leak
            The clutch seemed to be in good condition. About 40000 miles on the motor but only 15 years/7000 miles on the clutch that is in there now.

              Fitting a BSM 4-1 and I have also mounted two K&N filters which were made for the Yamaha FJ1200. Carbs now have 135 mains and the needle clip was moved down to second groove from the bottom. I'll start there

                Turn off the auto-rotate switch (little slide button next to the volume control).

                2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

                    That wasnt the picture I intended to put up, but as you can see I am also replacing the bolts with studs for the exhaust

                    135s was what I happened to have available. 115, 118 and 135 is what I have at hand. I will probably need to go down from 135 I suppose, but better start rich than lean!

                      First start up for 2015. Freshly rebuilt Öhlins rear shocks (no more oil seepage) new (to me) set of carbs, cleaned, new o-rings, BSM 4-1 exhaust, K&N air filters. In the carbs 135 mains, jet needle second slot from the bottom, i.e slightly richer than stock setting. Man, the basement stinks of gas fumes

                        Yep, 135s are too rich, as suspected. Smaller main jets on the way. Time to really get cracking and get this thing ready for the road, its actually warm-ish, sunny and spring like weather outside today
