    Rebuilding tach drive assembly

    Ive been searching and nothing comes up and I dont see any rebuild tutorials on Bikecliffs website. I havent disassembled a tach gear drive so I was looking for some reference material before getting after this one. I have a new oring and oil seal on order as its leaking from inside where the flat tang that engages the cable itself is.

      Dont know about all that but I will take pics. Im thinking its a pretty straight forward affair.

              It's been a while. Don't remember exactly, but I know it's a really small seal, and it's probably hard as a rock. Tough to get out. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

                  mine still is in need of being changed, had alott of trouble getting the drive assembly out and havent messed with it much. I should've left the cable on and yanked it out that way, but now the mount is broke clean off, and the end part is in the head. Tried plyers on the gear drive end, that the cable goes on but no luck. Might have to pop the cover and see what has to be removed to get it out from the inside.

                  Keep us updated how you get yours out.

                    Im gonna do a valve adjustment when the seals arrive , so I intend on just tapping it out from the gear side when the cam cover is off.

                      I think the secret to getting the unit in & out is turning the gear as you pull the thing out. Since the gears are angled, if you turn the final gear, (I used a small screwdriver in the square hole), the unit will push against the cam, and drive itself out, and back in. Hope this makes sense. You have to spin the final gear to get it in or out.

                        I can put a wrench on nthe big nut inn the nign ition cover and roll the engine over as I tap. This should help it wiggle loose.

                          I just replaced the oil seal and seal band. The inner oil seal was a pain to remove. I carefully used a small screwdriver and got it out in three pieces. I dipped the new oil seal in oil and was able to press it in using a 8mm socket. I also replaced the tach cable since mine had broken at the head. Planning to install the drive and cable once I finish changing out shims. This will be the first time I've had a working tach!

                            This job always reminds me of when, years ago when I was alot more ham-fisted than I am now, I took my impact driver and hammer to the screw for the tach drive on my Z-1. Knocked a hole in the head big enough to stick 2 fingers through. True story. I learned a lot that day.
