There are a couple different harness types but the basic switch is the same. I've swapped harnesses between different switches before without issue. Taking apart the switch is one of those learning experience things but it's not overly difficult once you get into it. It's good to clean all the old corrosion out and grease all the parts with dielectric grease anyway. One trick, if you decide to take apart one of those switches, is that the button needs to be rotated 90 degrees otherwise you can't take the switch apart. Don't break the dang button, it's easy to do.

I think the only difference is the boss on the bottom for mounting the clutch lever on the '83. The connectors and wiring should be the same for 850, 1000, and 1100e. If you really want an '80 I would trade for the '83 so I can hook up the choke on my BS36 carbs

Welcome to GSR. Looks like you got some good answers (consitent with what I would have said).

If the left side control switch still has the choke cable operator, I dont know if you can or cant use that on your 80 choke cable. Maybe your cable will not be long enouigh.

This question would be better in techincal section of the fourm. This section for questions about using the forum.
And, would be good for you to introduce yourself (typically in "Owners").
And, do post pics of the G and maybe you, but definatly the bike.
Yah, will need to know if you have the maroon or the black one before can answer any techincal questions. har har har
