    Drew's 83 750e project

    I'm going to look at an 83 750E for a potential purchase. Any particular issues with these to be wary of? I want to give it a good looking over before taking the plunge.

    They are decently reliable bikes. Just normal old bike issues, and typically GS charging system problems. The engine is much improved over the 2nd gen 750 variant and the bike is a fair bit lighter overall.

      Right off the bat, I'd look at the brake lines (front/rear), petcock (make sure it turns easy), sit on the bike and feel the front/rear suspension. Look inside the fuel tank, the frame, pegs, chain, seat and grab rail, turn signals. If you have the voltage checker...do that too. Heck, plug in compression tester and look also check for leaks around the fins.

      I'm sure there's more but that's what runs through my mind at the moment.

      Oh....and that's a nice year bike, btw.

        Ok, so I bought it. Tank is very clean inside. Everything is there except 1 of the horns. Pulled the stator cover, the crank seal is definitely leaking as he stated in the ad. Stator doesn't look burned. No damage anywhere except a small scuff on the mini-fairing. Exhaust is in great shape. Very little rust anywhere. Paint isn't in great shape and some of the decals are rubbing off. We poured a little oil in it just so I could hear the motor turn over, and it fired right up! R/R is fairly new, but not a series type. Has a replacement Sargeant seat cover in very good shape. He was asking 350, so I offered 275 and he took it. Bike has 28,000 miles on it.

          Post pics of this bargain...Almost any bike under $300 is a steal...especially if it fires up and has a title--those are my KEY factors anyway. Congrats!

                Washington plates? PO in the Navy? I hope the seal isn't a difficult item to repair. Nice score!

                    No seal on that side? The PO said the stator cover was filled with oil, not just a little as you would expect. What would cause that?

                        I hope that's all it is. Maybe I just need a stator cover gasket.
