    Newish GS1100 Owner

    Hi all,
Just a quick intro. I'm Mike, a former Soldier who has recently struck out on a different path. I'm in Colorado Springs, and am Currently a full time Nursing student. I've been lurking the forums since I bought my GS last July, but I'm finally registering/posting. Picked up a 82 GS 1100G with 10K miles for a flat $1000. I like the Bike, and I believe it has enormous potential, I just need to get her there. I'm fairly experienced wrench turner, having recently rebuilt my cars motor from the ground up, but I'm a bit new to bikes. At some point this will be a Cafe Racer conversion project, but maintenance takes priority.

    History of the bike:
My GS rode well When I test drove it, but there were lurking issues. I have replaced the entire charging system at this point (Stator, the recommended Polaris R/R, and battery), replaced all the fluids, and I am now looking into other issues. The most pressing problem is leaking fuel from either the #1 Carb or the petcock. The previous owner claimed a recent Carb service by a reputable shop, but it's time for me to really see whats what I suppose. I don't think they are vacuum synced and I may have other air leaks which I am going to address. I'm also going to replace all rubber/tubing/lines as the bike is older than me and I don't know how long any of it has been there.

Anyway, I've already learned a fair bit in these forums, so thanks to the guys who take the time to share their knowledge.

    Welcome to the site, Mike.
Nice to hear maintenance is first on the agenda.
If you have been lurking around the site you will probably have read that very few petcock rebuilds are successful.
A new one for your bike is relatively cheap.
If it is your carbs that are leaking, new o-rings are in your future. http://www.cycleorings.com/

When consulting the magic 8 ball for advice, one must first ask it "will your answers be accurate?"

I hadn't seen that! Thanks for mentioning it. Ill do a search and read up. Thanks for the link as well. I may well need it. I also just discovered the valve shim trading club. It's genius! Definitely gonna have to make use of that in the very near future.
