    voltage at idle

Hey folks. What voltage reading should I be getting at the battery while engine running at idle. 1984 katana 750 pop up. Thanks

To check the charging system you need to rev up the engine to 5000 rpm or so. If everything is up to snuff the voltage will be in the 14.5 VDC range. Assuming this is the case you are good to go. The voltage at idle is not a critical feature of the system.

At idle, stock GS, you will have not much more than battery voltage.

I have seen anything from just below 12 to over 13.5 volts at idle, but it also depends on YOUR definition of "idle" speed.

The bikes that showed about 12 at 1000-1100 RPM quickly went to about 13 volts at 1300 RPM and were over 14 volts by about 1800 RPM.

Once warm, I get 13.5 volts @ 1200rpm with headlight on. Then it shoots up quickly.
