new 1981 gs850 owner looking forward to riding the bike

My bike has full Vitter fairing and hard bags all around.
Looking at doing more touring on it and I have one big question.
My bike has the 4 gal tank. Will the larger 5.5 gal tank swap right out on this model or not?
Thanks for responses. Hoping to have greater touring range.

    Welcome to the site.
I am assuming with the smallish tank you have an L model?
The larger 5.8 gal. tanks only fit the G models.
Sounds like fab work would be required.

If you have what you are calling a "4 gallon tank", you likely have an 850L. Overall, there is nothing 'wrong' with that, but your fuel range WILL be a bit more limited. No, the 5.8 gallon tank from the G will not fit, unless you weld in some new mounts for the front of the tank and replace the entire front end (fork tubes, fender, calipers, triple clamps) with parts from a G.

Now for the good news: your tank actually holds 4.5 gallons.

        Welcome to GSR.

        My 80 850G had a Vetter Windjammer.
