530 vs 630

I've been told that 630 chains are old technology. I thought 530 vs 630 denoted only a size difference.

Is the reason 630s are falling out of favor because the technology (strength) of the 530 has improved to the point that the extra size and weight of 630 is no longer necessary?

That's pretty much it. Strength, o rings or x rings, they are just made better now. Even the most powerful bikes now come with 530s, so the 630 stuff is getting harder to find.

Probably by now. O rings came first, huge improvement over open chains. X rings came later, they last longer, keep the grease in, water and dirt out better, I think they are easier to bend so less power is lost.

I like my 630. I didn't realize that buying replacement parts would be a problem. So now I'll have to do extra care to keep the old beast in good shape.

yes, they do, (or at least they did) i have one, it was a 120 link chain that I cut to fit the 1150, bargain bin special $5.00!

Why does anyone prefer a 630? Heavier, no stronger, more power loss, with no tangible benefit. I converted my 1150 to 530 and can't think of a reason to have stayed with the 630.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It

^^^If a 630 works, why mess with it?

One thing I'm learning is...these bikes have Gremlins. Once you (in general terms) fix one thing, something else comes along and needs attention.

It's a nice upgrade but with the expenses that come along with repairing those Gremlins, I'd rather spend the money on those unique instances.

I agree,converted my 78 1000 to 530. Think my 82 GPz750 might have a new 630 under the grunge,it's either that or it needs a new chain as all the chain related stuff was flagged with post it paper.If the former I'll run it till it wears out,turns out to be the later it's going 530.
