gs 425 twin carb fuel lines

Hi all. just found this rather fascinating site. it's really going to come in handy for me.

I have a 1979GS425EN I came off it 2 1/2 years ago and broke me pelvis( of all things to break, including the bike ) I've started to rebuild it from scratch as I'm just dying to get back on it, and feel like I can try and restore her to the best of my ability( with no workshop, only a cold damp garage)

My prob is trying to locate parts in the uk(scotland) for it like a saddle and overhead cam( it's kinda knackered)

Also looking for advice on putting the twin carb back on, I know what the vaccum, and main inlet hoses are. Also the breather pipes, but where do the pipes go from the float chambers, I tried looking up my clymer manual but that doesn't help. it doesnt even tell u in the exploded diagram. :?

I dont have GS425, but on all the other GS models the rubber tubes (pipes?) coming from the float bowls are vents and usually just hang free under the airbox.

So if they are vents does that mean the other 2(inbetween the carbs round about the middle)are vents or do they do something else????? :?

Also just looked at the cylinder head and using my trusty clymer manual as a reference , found out that it is a 425 engine, with a 450 cylinder block and cylinder head 8O . does this mean it's a 425 or a 450 :? ?. any1 got any ideas?. :? ](*,)

I used to have a GS450, but that was 20 years ago and my memory about it is no longer precise. :-) If memory serves me, there were two overflow tubes leaving the bottom of the carbs, one vacuum tube pointing up located just above the float bowl on the top left side and a fuel nipple about the lower middle left side on #2 carb and fuel nipple lower middle of the right side on #1 carb. The nipples were connected to a "Tee" and the connection from the 3rd leg of the Tee ran to the fuel tank petcock. #2 carb vacuum pipe connected to the petcock vacuum nipple. The vacuum nipple on #1 carb was left open to air. (just my memory though...could be wrong)

From a displacement viewpoint, you now have a 450. From a parts standpoint excluding jugs and pistons, you still have a 425. I believe the displacement increase came from an increase in bore so cams, valves, etc would be the same.

so do u remember if the petcock had 2 or 3 nipples on it, the one i got has 2,but looks like it might have had 3, i could be wrong :?.

u got any idea where i can get a saddle from? thats the one thing i'm struggling to get my hands on. i found an australian site that said he might be able to get on , but he wont accept paypal and my partner refuse to give her card details over the net

I only remember the petcock as having two nipples. The one on the outside (left side) was fuel, the other was for a vacuum line.

Other than looking through ebay, I dont know where you would find a tank for a reasonable price. Ordering through secure internet sites is pretty safe. Just check to see that the URL is preceeded by https:

Perhaps some of the forum 450 owners will have sources for tanks.

You could take enough money from your checking account to cover the cost of the tank and open another checking account and get a debit card for that account. It would allow you to transfer funds to the "motorcycle fund" and use the debit card to pay. No risk for more than you have put into the account for what you wish to buy.

Hey! I've been helping a friend at his shop where he has a cycle salvage business. I parted out a 1978 Gs400 today. It is the standard bike, not an L model. The seat was intact and even has a fair(read recover soon!) cover on it. I'm not sure if that will work on your bike. Maybe you can do some checking and let me know if it will. Good luck!

Have you tried some breakers south of the border??
Many of the major players advertise in` MCN` every week, and most have a postal service....Also `M&P` stock many replacement seats, at I think about ?100..email them and see if they stock one for yours,they have a few GS,s listed, so they might be able to obtain.Website is`WWW.mandp.co.uk`

Welcome syms33. I thought I was the only one from Scotland on this great site. Have you tried Breaking Point in Aberdeen. They are on the web and it would be worth dropping them an email - they have replied to mine ok.
