If it does, is there a way to convert to caged/tapered bearings? Do you think that it would be cost-prohibitive to do so?
I'm pretty sure there are people here that have done it. You might want to start a new thread on it.

Does anybody know if any of the GS's out there had 39mm forks?

As it relates to the Honda nighthawk forks I mentioned earlier, I was wondering if I could get a 39mm GS triple tree and install the Nighthawk forks in there. I figure that would be one way to simplify the transition.

wkmpt........If you'll research the bearings for that nighthawk triple, I'll see if the bearing shop here in town carries the proper bearings to make it work on your GS......:D

I've done the research for you.........

http://www.sudco.com/vol33/181.pdf

purchase a NEW tapered bearing/race for your bike....should be

30x55x17 for the bottom.....it will fit the CB650SC triple

then get a 26x47x15 for the top instead of the 25x47x15 that your bike takes.

The difference is the top bearing inner bearing diameter........the GS takes a 25 mm and your CB650 has a 26mm upper diameter.

I'll check to see if my bearing place here in Colorado Springs makes the bearing you need tomorrow.

Paul

I just found out that they do make that bearing for you!!!

that upper bearing you need is listed on the link I posted on the steering stem kits where I found out which bearing size would fit your bike cross referenced to overall diameter and width of the bearing that will fit your GS......if its listed then there's a bearing company out there that makes what you need!

Just get a tapered bearing/race that is:

30x55x17 for the bottom
26x47x15 for the top

your Nighthawk 650 front end will fit then!

replace the races with the bearings!!!!! Don't leave those old races in the frame..........it could cause problems later on;)

I posted all the following while Paul was pwning the bearing issues above...

That's mighty cool of you. Lemme see what I can come up with.

On a somewhat related note, I went to the AllBalls Bearing website, they have a tapered bearing conversion kit available for my GS, it only requires a slight bit of machining on the top of the steering spindle. http://www.goallballs.com/pdf/Suzuki_Steering_Stem_Mod.pdf
The (perceived?) ease of the conversion leads me to believe that hopefully bearings won't present a giant issue.

I think I'm most concerned about the length and diameter (more homework on my part) of the Honda Steering spindle vs. the 'Zuki spindle. That's why I was inquiring as to the existence of a 39mm-forkable (is that even a word?!?) GS triple tree.

Forkable.

check first if your frame has the 48mm diameter bearings in the steering stem.....if that's the case, then you will need:

30x48x13mm for the bottom
26x48x13mm for the top

I think you'll need the later!

I'll check prices/availability tomorrow for you......

General Question for all:

If you had to choose between a complete 1984 39mm Honda Nighthawk 650 front end and 1982 GS1100 front end, which one would you choose, and why?

I'm looking at purchasing either one, and I have located the appropriate bearings to make either front end fit alright, so at this point, what are the strong (or weak) points for either one? I need to make a choice by this weekend.

And one other thing, would I be able to fit a GS dual-disc wheel on the honda front end? I really like the star-shaped mags on the GS.

The Honda fork beside being stiffer just by virtue of diameter is also most likely a Showa fork. Showa suspension components were usually superior to the KYB components Suzuki used at the time. In '88 Suzuki went with a 43mm Showa fork like on Paul's bike. You would probably have to use the Honda wheel so that could be a deal killer.

I've been poking around (mostly unsuccessfully) to get the dimensions of the Honda rear wheel that corresponds to the front wheel on the front end I'm looking at.

Ultimately, I'm trying to see if the Honda rear wheel would fit my GS. I'm not wild about the way they look, but at least that way I'd have a matched set.

Anybody have any experience with this? Would it fit? (Boy I'm asking that question a lot these days...)

Or what about adapting the GS front wheel to fit the Honda fork?

if you have the money and the time for custom spacers to make the GS wheels fit the Honda front end then lets do it!!!

if you go with the GS front end you may find things line up and cross over cheaper and easier.....Honda parts cost more!

He could also use GSXR750 forks...they're Showa when the 1100 used KYB...

What year did the GSXR start using the Showas?

On a related note, there doesn't seem to be anything useful on ebay right now for a good price...

Ultimately, bang-for-buck (and dual-disc, of course) is my number one consideration in front end selection at this point in my life. I'd like to get the stiffest dual-disc forks I can for the money. Right now, the best I can find for my money spent is the Honda front end.

Update:

I had decided on the Nighthawk front end, so I contacted the owner, told him I had cash and could come get them this (past) weekend. He responded back, said that would be good for him. I followed up asking for an address or directions.

No reply from him, for days.

Then, I get a response from the guy [in what seems like mere minutes after the GS1000 front end on ebay I was watching ended--$54 plus shipping for EVERYTHING, wheels, brakes, tree, speedo, handlebars, EVERYTHING! Grr.] telling me he sold it earlier that same day.

What a douchebag. I hate people like that.

So, end result, the search for a front end continues.
