Removing the wires from he coils turned out to be surprisingly easy. Rather than use splicers (as I was originally going to do) I decided to swap out the entire wire.
The wires I used were bought at Advance auto Accell p/n 3008. These are yellow 7mm solid core wires copper tinned. So you can keep the plug caps if you wish to.
I removed the coil with wires attached, then removed the caps after marking on the coil which wire went to which cylinder. The wires are held in the coil by gluing the outer sheath to the coil. Once you remove the glue the wire will pull straight out ( on my '79 GS850G with points). Push new wire in and re-glue. Attach your cap and that is it.
