changing out plug wires on stock coils

Ok, after replacing my caps I found that the stock plug wires were to short and were causing a strain on the caps.

Removing the wires from he coils turned out to be surprisingly easy. Rather than use splicers (as I was originally going to do) I decided to swap out the entire wire.

The wires I used were bought at Advance auto Accell p/n 3008. These are yellow 7mm solid core wires copper tinned. So you can keep the plug caps if you wish to.

I removed the coil with wires attached, then removed the caps after marking on the coil which wire went to which cylinder. The wires are held in the coil by gluing the outer sheath to the coil. Once you remove the glue the wire will pull straight out ( on my '79 GS850G with points). Push new wire in and re-glue. Attach your cap and that is it.

Easy easy.. I have yet to glue the wire back into the coils on my 850. Just stuck em in the holes.

I've never done it myself but I've read here where people have reported sucess by digging the old coil wire out using a pick tool instead of cutting the coil open. Worth a try, you can always cut if the wire doesn't come out easily.

Hi,

Use an exacto knife, dental pick, or similar instruments to carefully chip away the factory epoxy. Pull the wire out and clean the holes. Be careful not to damage the spike in the bottom of the holes. Push the new wire in and re-apply new epoxy.

I had to cut away on 1 coil terminal, just couldn't get the darn epoxy out lol. The new epoxy is Goop's sealer/epoxy
