    Mapping Software

I'm posting this inquiry in a few places, hoping to attract the masses.

I'm in the hunt for mapping software that has the ability to catalog my GS travels. Sort of like a personal road atlas. It must be capable of being updated as I add new roads. Eventually, I might have every road in the country highlighted!

Up to now I have been using google maps. My GS travels atlas looks like this http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...2f535dabee&z=5 But the file is now too large and is very slow to update. In fact, I have stopped trying. I'm now way behind on my adventures.

So if anyone knows of a better software package, please let me know.

It depends how you are recording the routes in the first place, are you using a GPS box, or doing it manually, plotting routes on the map? I have been using my GPS to record my travels.

Digging through the operating system of my Garmin Zumo, I found the track archives were all .gpx format, which was interesting as they could be viewed using Topofusion (http://www.topofusion.com/). The free version is OK but limited. More worrying was that it showed what speed I was doing at the time.

I now use Google Earth (GE). I found a free online service (http://www.gpsvisualizer.com) which converts .gpx files to .kmz, which drag and drop onto GE, so I can browse routes by map or satellite overlays, adding in photos where I have them.

    Regards

Si, thanks for the tip mate. I've played with google earth, but never tried using it for this purpose. I'll give it a try.
