    Strange Float Height Quandry

    In order to get the float height up to 22mm on a set of BS34 Mikuni's, the float tang needed to be bent quite a lot. I've never seen a set that required such an angle.

    Only thing I can think of is the float needle and seat are the wrong parts but they appear to be stock. I pulled out another needle from another set of the same carbs and it matches this one exactly but I don't have a spare float seat to compare to.

    Any suggestions on what's going on?

    All looks stock to me. I remember my 1000G having a decent angle on the tang like that. If it works I wouldn't worry about it... looks like it will.

      I've seen a few like that.
      Makes you wonder if they set the float at the factory. The seat can't wear out that much and if the spring in the needle is good well it's good.

        The float tangs on my recently rebuilt 1100 carbs needed to ALL be bent quite a bit too; made me wonder if they were all set incorrectly by the PO (or factory), or if I was doing something wrong...

        Bike runs well though...

        I've also had to tweak other tangs quite a bit on occasion as well, makes you wonder if anyone ever checked them before?

          gasket

          I don't want to insult your intelligence with something so stupid but...was that gasket in place when you measured? You didn't measure to it, did you?

            It's a fair question but no, the gasket was removed to measure them.

            Guess I'll just run them as is. My other 1000 has K&L needles so I can't compare to these. I have some extra floats though and they don't have the tang bent over like these.

            The PO told me he "rebuilt the carbs", but two of the floatbowl passages for the choke feed were plugged up - thus explaining why he said the bike was hard to start. Plus of course, all the float heights were way off. Once again we learn that the first thing to do when purchasing a new GS is pull off the carbs and go though them yourself.

              My 750 was the same way. The initial measurement was 5mm off. I had bend the tang quite a bit to get to 22.4mm. It runs great now though. I just rebuilt the carbs on the GK and it was much closer to being correct.

                Hey Ed, what is that mesh bubble on the end? (forgot the name of it where the need sits in it) Mine does not have that, but bought a spare set on e-bay and they were the same carbs but did have that mesh bubble. How come?

                  They are the inlet valve screen. (filter)

                      They keep large particles out of your float needle and seat area. This can be a bad thing

                        Really interesting. For three years that I've had this bike I didn't know I should have those type of inlet filters. I will have to clean up the spare ones that came out of the other carbs and use them. Would that affect the height of the tabs?

                          No, the depth of the port for the valve are made for these.
