    Timing chain question

    Hi every one!

It's this time of the year again, time to tend to our beloved gs.

I contacted an old school mechanic about tuning my GS850G (42k km). He asked me if the the motor had a tendence to hang when reving in neutral. That meening that, at idle, if I gave it a quick throttle the motor would hang a moment before settling back to idle. The answer to that was yes. He said that the reason for this was common and was the cam chain that was too stretched and altered the timing. He said my timing chain needed to be changed.

I've been hagning around this forum for a while and have never noticed this subject in the posts. Do you think what he sais makes sense?

If this is the case do you think I should go for a OEM chain or another brand? The suzuki chains are probably more expensive but does this mean the are better?

    Thanks

Your mechanic knows just enough to be dangerous.

90% of the time a hanging idle on a GS is due to leaking intake boot O-rings. This is the #1 GS problem and you can find dozens if not hundreds of threads on this exact same subject here.

Please do some research for yourself before handing any money to your mechanic friend, or better yet, do your own wrenching.

At 42k km your cam chain shouldn't have stretched anything near noticeable - it's just moving in to the prime of its life if you like. You might like to consider swapping mechanic if your guy thinks that is the cause.

The hanging idle is almost always due to an air leak somewhere on the carb side and I suspect is one of the comonest problems owners encounter. Luckily it's easy and very cheap to fix. If you do a search you'll find loads of info on here.
