    Head Gasket Leak

The gasket between the cylinders and the cylinder head had a small leak before I started to adjust the valves. While I was adjusting the valves, I loosened the head volts and then retorqued them in the right sequence in two stages (to 15 lbs and then to 28 lbs). I think it is leaking more now. Could I have buggered the gasket by loosening and then retorqueing the cylinder head bolts?

Sounds bad. You only want to loosen enough to get the nut moving and then go straight to tightening.

I loosened all of them just enough to take the tension off. I then retorqued them in the sequence outlined in the manual (thanks, bikecliff) to 15 ft/lbs and then went through a second pass to 29.

I may be OK. There was some smoking during my ride this am. However, once I got back home, the smoking seemed to be much less than before. Maybe I was just burning off old oil on the outside.

Since it sounds like you loosened all of them together, you probably dont want to make a habit out of that.
