    Coil Sweat?

    I fixed my short on the ignition. Still wouldn't start. I did a full voltage check and found I only had 7.2 volts and the coil. So I did the coil relay mod. Still wouldn't start. I got fuel but coils won't fire. I check the ignitor all good. Checked the pick up all good. I have a clymer and followed steps in it and steps I found on this website. I think my coils went out But I never seen 2 go out at the same time. With it switched on my coils had a waxy film collect at the bottom of them. I never seen anything like it. I'm very goood with electrical work. I'm an ASE Auto Diesel and LPG Tech. And I specialize in electrical and electronic. These bikes are unique. I don't mind working on it but I do want to ride sometime. Please help.

    if u think it is coils did you buzz them 4 3 ohms?

      They are stock and the plug wires are dry and have small splits. But i have done the water mist test and there was no ark. I do want new ones but witch ones? I found some that have changable cables and some low ohm.

        Hi,

        3-5 Ohm on the primary and 20-28k on the secondary is stock If memory serves me
        Ignitor's are around 80ohms

        if your getting 7.2 v at the coils then the Ignition module is getting the same voltage. Mine will not fire below 9 vdc or is hit and miss.

          The coils are junk if they are leaking.
          1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
          1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

            if U go below 3 ohms U will fry your ignitor

              presumably the 7.2V got better after the coil relay mod; he did not report. My ED was a "hard start" at <10V

                I got 4 ohms at primary and 26 at secondary and my ignitor is 86ohm. The coils started to sweat after the relay mod and I got 12.6 vdc at the coils

                  Well sounds like everything is OK electrically it is just that your coils have sprung a leak and need replacing
