    only one coil hot

We have been chasing some electrical gremlins in the headlight area of my 80 gs1100 & therefore have had the key on. I notice the 1-4 coil is getting quite warm when the key is on for a few minutes. Just the one coil. The bike wasn't fired at all when we were doing this.
    Is this normal?

I believe power is at the coils when the key is on - but the coils are
intermittently grounded by the sig generator as it rotates around the pick up. Only one side (coil) is "on" at one time. If you were to rotate the crank a little it would essentially "shut-off" the 1/4 side & power the 2/3 side.

Unplug the coils if you are keeping the key on for long periods.

Agreed, it is normal for one of them to get hot but not what you want.
