    switching to 5 ohms

i am about to replace my coils. original i wanted to go w/ the dyna 3 ohms, has i was looking i saw they have a 5 ohms. would this 5 ohms be better for my bike. from what i understand the higher the coils ohms the better rite? this will be on my 1980 gs1100l.

I think 3 to 5 is the right range. In this case 3 ohms would be best but it should all be practically the same.

5 ohm were used so they didn't melt the points. You can use 3 or 5 with the 80 electronic ignition. The stock coils are 3 ohms.

I think the stock coils are more like 4 ohms, but yea, you can use from 3-5 ohm without worry.

You are right, "more is better", but you had better make sure which "more" you want.

It is current flow through the coil that sets up the magnetic field which, when it collapses, makes the spark for the plugs.

What you want is more current. More resistance (ohms) will reduce that current.
