    Fork seal replacement

    Hey all -

    I was trying to find a 9mm nut for the end of a fork tool - to hold the damper in place while loosening the hex bolt to release it - and I can't seem to find any locally.

    Any tips? Would a 5/16" (7.9375mm) nut possibly do the trick?

    Try a broom handle pushed in hard. Usually works.

      SAE nut will work just fine, sizes? Don't quote me, Just loaned my tool to Cliff. takes a 3/4" wrench as I recall

        So I take it exact sizing is not the point. Just hold from turning without breaking it?

            A little heat to soften the locktite on the allen bolt helps bunches!

              I used heat, an electric impact and leave the spring in for tension.
              1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
              1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

                Air impact zinged them out just fine for me...

                Used a spark plug socket reversed, (the extension goes in the spark plug side), with a couple of extensions to tighten...

                    The wrench size for the nut you need is 19mm or 3/4". Using a long 1/2" threaded rod, lock two nuts together, put a pair of vice grips on the other end, allen wrench on the bottom and you're home free!

                      Aside from "DUH" I don't know what to say.

                      Of course you're right. I thought that 5/16" nut looked small!

                      So 3/4" is about perfect (as mentioned by Lynn) and I drove a long way to buy the wrong dang nut.

                      Wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't spouted off to Nessism earlier today about being detail-oriented.
