Need help please and thank you

I have a 1979 gs750 I hqve a problem with getting it into gear. First gear is extreamely hard and you have to tap tap tap it to get it to go . Second gear is not as hard but third is the same as first. It also won't go into fourth or fith at all it has a hard time hitting out of third if it goes at all. I am not a mechanic by anymeans I do do all my own work between me and my grandfather we can usually figure things out I am kind of under the impression that it may be the clutch fork being bent causing theproblem
Does anyone have any info that could posibly help me oh yah it also has a new clutch cable thank you very much to whoever helps I just wanna get it working so I can get out and ride

Might be a bent shifter rod, bent shifter fork, or something as simple as a clutch adjustment. You might find a manual on my website.

Thanks for the info and the welcome I love the way my bike looks sounds and rides just putting that out there oh and the problem
I am gonna do somepre reasearch before I tear in but rest assured I will find and fix the problem

if this helps at all....

on my 550, the shifter rod is bent slightly, just barely enough to make it a chore to get the sprocket cover off and on. but I did notice that I had problems shifting at first. I found that if I adjusted the shifter linkage in the right direction it makes all the difference. It went from not wanting to shift at all, to not even noticeable. If the linkage is pressing straight in the direction of the bend, it won't have the rotation it needs to shift.
