    81 GS1000G Tach Problems

I am new to the forum. I say that because I'm not sure this question should be posted here. My tachometer barley moves and does not respond to quick changes in RPM. However, going down the road it eventually catches up. The cable is spinning fine (held cable revved engine). I have a shop manual but no instructions for tear down and trouble shooting. Does anyone have any idea what to look for in the tach and maybe some tear down instructions?

    Thanks in advance,

Those tacks are driven by a magnet, Yours is probably very dirty inside. If you wanted to put forth the effort, there is a thread on opening one up.
That said, buy another one, they are fairly common.

      Hi,

Inside your tach and speedo is a bell shaped housing. There is a magnet connected to the cable input which spins and causes a watch spring-type apparatus to move the needle. Clean the gunk from inside the bell housing and you should be OK.

      Thank you for your indulgence,
