    gs550 head question

so I burned myself buying the head for what I thought was a 79 gs550, but turned out to be an 80. still need to get a head. will an 81 gs550L head work on an 80 gs550E and be able to use 79 gs550 cams?

The cams interchange on all '77-'82 550's, although the timing may be slightly different between the years.

I don't understand your post about getting burned on a head. 77-79 heads are small intake port and take VM carbs. 80-82 heads are large port for BS/CV carbs. What exactly do you need?

just exactly that, I didnt realize there was a change from mechanical to the cv carbs in 1980, carbs I have wont work on the bike and its cheaper to get the right head then to buy 79 carbs and an airbox, how do you adjust to compensate for the timing difference?

You don't. The valve lifts are slightly different and that difference pretty much cancels out any timing differences in real life. You won't notice any difference.
