    Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick

Thought i would get more replies here instead of my project thread.

1983 GSX250 has developed a annoying tick, cant pin point where its coming from but it doesnt sound like bottom end at all.

    Tick rises with revs

Will tick up to 1500rpm then it goes away

Goes away when returning to idle and once there it comes back again

Bike will refuse to rev and cut out, not everytime but say once in every 5 revs

Once it has cut out its hard to restart and when it does restart it wont rev

I've checked the valves and the cam chain and tensioner the carbs have been cleaned out. I'm getting a bright white spark from each plug and its got oil in it.

    Any ideas?..

okay well i pulled the cams out today to check them, exhaust has 2 cracks on 1 tooth so thats not useable, so i've got 2 options, i have been offered another engine in good running condition for $150, or i try and find another cam sprocket which will fix the sprocket but probably not my ticking problem.

I spose there is 1 other option, sell it as is and buy something else

Do the other engine... you then have this one for spares except that sprocket of course

It is the cheaper option.. might even get it cheaper if i remove it.

I have to tell you, I love your bike. Suzuki never offered that model here, though there was a 300 GSX version - a bit "L"-ish IIRC, but it wasn't as sharp as your two color paint scheme with standard/forward type seating. Something about the seat looks pretty sharp too.

My ES just developed a similar tick, tick, tick... She starts and runs fine, plenty of power, just a new (and annoying) tick. Also sounds like it is not the bottom end, sounds high as in the cam/follower/valve...

Best of luck with the new engine, great to have a spare top end, barrels, and a bottom end - much better option. And if you did run across a cam for a 30 yr old engine, you'd have a complete running spare engine

Thanks Scott and Pete... shutup lol. It does have an awesome sound with the 2 into 1, i would much rather fix the engine rather than get another one, but from a look into the engine down at the crank it looks like some teeth on the crank itself are now damaged, which is a pain because i have only recently done the valves and top end gaskets, which makes it all a waste and i dont wanna do it again.

So tomorrow i'm going to pull the engine out of the frame, again, and have a real good look at it all. Any ideas as to why the engine doesnt tick when its returning to idle from a rev?..

If it's damaged teeth, my guess would be if it's going down to idle, then a lot of the pressure is off those teeth. As opposed to them pulling the chain along, inertia will be moving everything but they won't have the same pressure.

                        Just a guess though...

i measured the chain too, and it is 10mm under the limit so its not the problem, what about rod bearing starting to go?...

Gettin' outta my league here I'm afraid, but I do recall hearing that bottom end stuff is more of a knocking sound... could be wrong of course...

okay, i pulled the cams and tensioner out and went to town on the tensioner, it tested okay in my hands the other day but when i was pulling the cams out today it was playing up so i went to town on it. Looks like it was sticking when it reached the end of its travel, every surface was sanded & polished and i greased it up and put it back in. But for now.... its running
