    bucket

    gday i am just wondering if the small circles on the inside of the buckets that sit on top of the valve spring etc are known for wear and could this effect the spacing on the shims. thanks guys

    The inside of the bucket is not a wear point since there is no relative motion between the bucket and valve.

      The small circles? Do you mean the shims? They aren't truly the wear point, the valve face and seat are what wear, thus making it necessary to measure the clearance between the lobe and shim, and move and/or replace shims as necessary to obtain the correct clearance between same.

        shims

        gday again, i have tried to adjust the valve spacing with a 2.30 shim and still have no gap ie .030 .080 could this mean that the valves need re seating. or could the cam lobes be worn or could it be where they sit on the head??? with the lower shim sizes does that mean it has a lot of wear or does it mean it has heaps left, i am unsure,any help would be appreciated

          It means there's not much "wear" left.

          From the factory the shim sizes were probably up near 2.9 or 2.85 or thereabouts. The shim sits in the bucket, and the whole assembly is depressed by the cam lobe. Under the bucket are the valve springs and the valve stem. The cam depresses the bucket, which depresses the valve springs and the valve opens. Over time and miles, the valve face "tulips" a little causing the valve to recess a little farther into the head, thereby decreasing the clearance between the cam lobe and the shim. A smaller shim must be inserted to regain the proper clearance. Eventually, you'll have to remove the head and replace the valve(s) with new and have new valve seats ground.

            Mate here's a tip I got on the forum here for doing valve adjustments...

            If you can't measure clearance, then you need a smaller shim obviously.

            So, to work out roughly how far you need to go, try to rotate the shim bucket by hand.

            If it moves freely, then you probably only need to go down one shim size as there is at least some clearance there to allow it to rotate.

            If it doesn't move freely, you will probably need to go down at least two shim sizes.
