    GS300 wont crank

The motor is all mounted up and the gasket sealant around the bottoms of the cam end caps is all set up and dried now. Everything torqued down so im seriously wanting to fire this thing up now. The bike is a 1983 GS300L-D. I adjusted the valves the right way i think and i know the cam chain timing is spot on so no bent valves. I have been using the battery out of my KZ1000 to do testing. Its a brand new battery and has plenty of cranking force. Tried to start it a little while ago and the solenoid just clicks. I jumped the two posts on the solenoid with a screwdriver and the same thing happened. Removed the 2 bolts that hold in the starter and slid it back out of the engine cover and then hit the button. thing damn near jumped out of my hand when i hit it and spun up like crazy with no problems. Then i put a wrench on the end of the crank and rotated it by hand. It seems to turn pretty hard. I had this problem when i first got back to working on it. Squirting oil on the cam lobes fixed the problem and it cranked with little to no problems. I already pulled the plugs, put oil in the cylinders, and cranked the motor with the plugs out. I also ran 2 motorcycle batteries together this time to help circulate the oil. Cranked slow as hell even with the plugs out. Tried just 1 battery again and it still just clicks. Anybody have any ideas on what i should do? Did i do something wrong when tightening the cam chain maybe? Im at my wits end and could really use some help.

    Thanks guys,
    KT

With the plugs out turning the crank with a wrench should be a one finger job.
What caused you to open the engine and how much did you do, was it only top end?

Don't say can't, as anything is possible with time and effort, but, if you don't have time things get tougher and require more effort.

yep, 3 angle valve job, honing, new rings, and new gaskets. Found out what was wrong. Didnt lube where the cams ride on the head and theres scoring on one of them on the exhaust cam over cylinder 1 can i run this bike at all like this or is it pretty much screwed? the scoring is bad enough to feel with your finger nail.

I'd oil everything in the top end and give it a try - pour oil over the cams, rockers, etc. Turn over the engine with a wrench to make sure it spins smooth before moving forward. If it doesn't spin smoothly, there is something else wrong.

i just got done pulling the cams completely out and then re installing them with grease around the ends of the cams. Also had to redo the timing and i shot oil all over the rockets and tops of the valves. Probably gonna pull the caps off the cams again tomorrow and re-grease again just to be sure before i install the valve cover again. I did crank the motor with a wrench after putting it all back together and everything turned great. Should be ready to start up tomorrow night.
