    No search option?

    Hi
when I do a search in the forums I get back this message :

    Fatal error
: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 524288 bytes) in /home/thegsres/public_html/_forum/search.php on line 1160

I know this is probably not the place to ask this question, but I don't know where else to go..

    cheers

Try searching on just a word or two. Toggling "titles only" greatly helps speed up the search process too.

Oh, and good job on searching before asking redundant questions.

    Good luck barb.

That's a PHP error (the coding language the forum is written in is PHP). There's a configuration option that limits the size of php scripts in the server's memory. For security reasons, the default option is pretty small. I imagine this forum has gotten big enough (as in, a lot of posts and topics) that the default setting is too small to allow the search, hence the error is coming up.

I just ran some searches and it worked fine. Even searched on a three word string without issue. You guys trying to perform a search accessing the system by phone?

You are in the right place...no need to change to a different forum

what are you trying to search for? You can limit your search to a particular forum and by date to minimize your hits.

There used to be a guy on here that made it his life's goal to chase away new forum members by telling everyone of them to use the search function (which is garbage on this site BTW).
Just post the question and someone helpful should answer soon enough.

The search function here is excellent. It's just that some people are too lazy to use it; they prefer to be spoon feed info all the time. I amazes me that people can find the GSR, but once here they can't be bothered to look for info. I for one will not spoon feed, but I will help teach people how to search. Using "titles only" is the key.

Poor little spoon feeder / information provider.
Trust me, I don't spoon feed anymore. I leave that to those that enjoy that sort of thing. As far as my ignore list goes, I reserve that for people that are A-holes and/or guys running an open exhaust. Most the A-holes are banned now, but not all...

I always use the search function first, but sometimes you just can't find an answer to your particular issue. when that happens, then I'll ask the question on the forum and hopefuuly someone can answer. the serach functipn should always be used first.

You would think that the amount of time it takes to post some smart ass comment they could just 'spoon feed' them some useful information and stop being an A hole.......

                          No search option option

DON'T MAKE ME COME OVER THERE!! Well, actually, yes I'd love to come over there, the roads in your part of the world look freakin' awesome.

I know how to use a search option Ed, but thanks for the input. The one answer that seemed to fit my bill "That's a PHP error (the coding language the forum is written in is PHP). There's a configuration option that limits the size of php scripts in the server's memory. For security reasons, the default option is pretty small. I imagine this forum has gotten big enough (as in, a lot of posts and topics) that the default setting is too small to allow the search, hence the error is coming up" was great, and explains it well. I will probably be asking my very simple question somewhere without having access to the search option.
                          thanks everyone,
                          Barbara

Most certainly it is not. There's a lot of good value in threads here that you can't unearth by just searching titles with one or a few words.

I think some of the problem comes down to people naming their threads properly. For example "Help! Clutch Problem!" instead of "Clutch Cable Not Smooth" and things like that. If you search for "clutch smooth" it wont find that thread.
