    Just purchased my first suzuki

And it happened to be a running gs850 with a clean and clear title. I paid 575 for it, and overall it is in pretty good shape. Came complete with vetter hard bags and a windjammer ferring (that still works) haha. I plan to clean and tune it up and convert it to a brat/cafe bike. Pretty excited about this project and will be using this forum a lot! Ill post a picture when im on my computer...it isnt liking my iphone.

Get rid of the fairing, panniers, seat and handlebars and you've got the makings of a nice machine there for a good price. Think twice about the cafe/brat conversion, the 850 is not generally considered to lend itself to this. Having said that it's your bike to enjoy anyway you like. Welcome to the forum!

      What took you so long
The 850 is an excellent allrounder - very little you could do to improve it once everything has been brought back to good condition.
      Enjoy.

Ive had an 05 yamaha xv250 since 07. Yeah, ive been ready for a bigger bike for a LONG time. Bobbed that one, and have had tons of fun with it. Been ready for a bigger new project.

You might get enough to afford a nice seat if you sell the bags and mounts. Or keep them for when you decide to take some nice long trips on it after you decide against going the rat bike route.

I would concur on not bobbing it. Best left in its original geometry for handling reasons. take a look at the Clist Funnies and DO NOT EVER be a sawzall wanna be wizard like those guys are!!! PLEASE!!!

I mean go ahead and hack away all you want..its yours. But for god sakes use some sort of actual artistic thought process before starting.

I made a pretty nice solo seat in my last bike so i think i may try to make a nice cafe/brat seat as well. I try to do everything as low budget as possible....but i try not to make it look cheap, if that makes sense.

Granted, I did not have much money when I made this "bobber", & most is home made mods. Also, the bike runs like a top, so I didnt do any performance mods...just cosmetic. Relocated signals, home made hard tail strutts, home made solo springer seat, de-baffeled, stripped all the extra weight off. I never did get the rearsets, so it had a little bit of an awkward riding position with the clip-ons, but it is super fun to ride (shorter distances). There were a few other things I would have done as well, but i was ready to move on....not the most recent photo of the bike...just the most recent i could find. cleaned it up a little and changed a couple small things since that pic

to be perfectly honest, cuttinng anywhere on the frame scares the crap out of me...but i bought this bike with the mindset that it is going to be a project, so i will just have to see where that takes me. Im definitely not going to get trigger happy though!

Just to warn you in advance...

Many of the crusty veteran GSR'ers don't take too kindly to folks that hack up perfectly good GS's. The GS850 is one of the greatest general purpose bikes ever made, and reducing it's functionality for the sake of being "cool" won't endure you to many here. Personally, I draw the line at people that run a loud exhaust, like your "de-baffled" exhaust on your other bike. Loud bikes hurt the motorcycle community at large, so while I may watch your build thread, I won't be offering any help.

I understand. Honestly, the 250 was so quiet and small I had issues of being notice while riding. Debaffeling that little guy did not make it loud by any means...ive heard many stock pipes much louder than my debaffeled 250. Lol. I'm also not here to get on any ones bad side, just looking for friendly advice from time to time.
