1977 gs550 died on me today

Hello fellow bikers! I am new to this forum but I purchase a 1977 gs550 4 days ago from a private seller and it had it's first break down today. I rolled up to a stop sign and the bike stalled on me. I looked under my bike and it had a massive puddle of what I think was gas and then the light and the dash stopped working so I think the battery might have died. Any thoughts on what could have gone wrong? The bike does not make any noise now whatsoever when I try to turn it on. Please help!!! This is my first vintage bike

Welcome to the world of 40 year old motorcycles. Please check the Newbie Mistakes thread linked in my signature and search out Basscliff's website. You can download a manual for your bike there as well as many other helpful tutorials.

    Good luck.

I'm not sure how a puddle of gas would have gotten under your bike that quickly and you not have notice a gas smell from it leaking before stopping. Are you sure it was from your bike and exactly how big do you consider massive. Could it have been there before your stop? Have you checked out your battery yet. Does it still have 12+ volts? Are the cables tight on the terminals? Too many unknowns for good suggestions. Check the battery, terminals, main fuse, more gas leaking.
