1981 GS1000G. Will a gearbox off other models fit this bike.

    I have a 1981 Suzuki GS1000G.
Can anyone help with this basic question?

Do the gearbox components of other models of the GS1000 of the same year fit this bike?.

I am restoring a 1981 bike, and the gearbox seems to be jammed in neutral.
During the restoration, the engine fell of a dolley onto the floor, it fell about a foot, and as there was no cosmetic damage, i thought little of it.

I have the engine back into the frame now, and when i was bolting the drive shaft back onto the engine, i thought i would drop it into gear so i could get better leverage on the spanner.
The gear lever will not change into any gear, up or down. It is stuck.

So i need to take the engine back out and have a look at what is wrong.
If i need new gearbox parts, will the components off other models of GS1000 fit this bike?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Most likely the gear shifting shaft got bent when the engine fell. This shaft pulls through the engine from behind the clutch, but if the shaft is bent you will have to cut it off flush with the case on the LH side of the engine before trying to pull it through. Check the parts fishe under the "gear shifting" page to see the parts in question. It may be possible to straighten the shaft but doubt it.

    Good luck.

    EDIT:

The shaft in question fits the following bikes...

Suzuki Motorcycle 1980 GS1000G GEAR SHIFTING

Suzuki Motorcycle 1979 GS850G GEAR SHIFTING

Suzuki Motorcycle 1980 GS850GL GEAR SHIFTING

Suzuki Motorcycle 1980 GS1000GL GEAR SHIFTING

Suzuki Motorcycle 1981 GS850GL GEAR SHIFTING

Suzuki Motorcycle 1981 GS1000GL GEAR SHIFTING

And, for the rest of the transmission, you are probably looking at just the '80/'81 GS1000G for parts. I know there are different ratios than the 850, which is otherwise quite similar, not sure about compatibility with the 1100G.
