    Choke will not stay up

    Before the changeover there was a post about choke knobs not staying up. I had the same problem, so last night I decided I would do something about it. The fix, in my case was quite simple. I pulled up the rubber boot to reveal the adjustment cap. I then unscrewed the cap, slid three pieces of thin plastic along the choke knob shaft through the hole in the cap, then very carefully screwed the cap back on. By taking up space the plastic strips increase pressure against the 4 little pinch tabs. I used plastic strips cut from ziploc sandwich bag. The thick part above the ziploc. It is about a five minute fix and may save someone the cost of replacing a cable.

    I just use the clothes peg that was with it when I bought the bike. It clips under the choke handle, is easily adjustable, and this is no ordinary clothes peg, it's colour coded to the bike. Very classy. :?

        I just replaced mine today. It took around five minutes to change and I don't have to frig around with it .Don't need the hassle. :

          If I remember right,under the rubber cover there is a threaded cap that you can tighten to adjust friction on the cable to keep it up! Both my 850's are that way & they work great as long as the threaded cap are tight enough. Shouldn't take more than hand leverage to do the job. :P

            what year bikes have the choke cable, my 78 has a huge choke arm on the carb.

                Well Scotty I use the plain old natural wood color ones. The springs are also natural color.

                  A different approach

                  You guys need to think out of the box. I use my left hand to hold the choke out and a loop made from a cable tie to hold the clutch lever in.

                    I did one better Don, I disconnected (bypassed) the clutch interlock in the headlight bucket.

                        The 82 GS1100G has the choke adjust under the left hand grip. it has a thumb lever to open and close. My first week with the new bike, the little phillip head screw fell out and the bushing that holds the whole assembly fell out while I was riding! It has a friction mechanism build into the bushing! What a pain! I had to use a little lathe and I turned a small top hat shaped bushing from aluminum and used an o-ring to rebuild the friction thingie! Anyway it now works like a champ, the same is used on my wifes 82 850L. I think the cloths pin is a great way to use hold the knob up by the top clamp! You could even paint it to match the bike and put your name on it and everything!

                          My choke slips back in too, so what I do is squeeze the clutch in with my left hand like everybody else, hold the choke up with my right hand, and then hit the starter button with my right elbow. Crude, true, but the bike starts right up.

                            Did you try pouring Viagra down the cable? :roll:

                            But your cable is only 24 years old so I'm surprised there's any problem. The 1985 models can hardly keep theirs off! :roll:

                            On the other hand, being a "naked bike" perhaps it is a little shy/emarassed and distracted. :roll: :roll:

                              I had this same trouble on my bike but i was messing around with it one day and noticed that if you give it a quarter turn that it stays up with out a problem.....could just be my bike seeing as its messed up sometimes...thought i would through that in there
