    Re-installing Fork Caps

I changed the fork oil in my 1980 GS550E and, after flushing with some brake cleaner and re-installing the springs, it was time to put the caps back on. Arrgh ! If you think you're just going to compress the springs with your thumbs and somehow get the cap threaded on right and get it turning you can forget it. Instead get a metric four-way lug wrench (mine has 17, 19, 21, and 23 mm sockets), and use the 23 on the 22mm cap. If your bike also has 22mm caps you can use a lug wrench with a 7/8" English socket. The lug wrench gives you both good leverage for compressing the springs and enables you eyeball the insertion so you won't cross-thread. Once you get half a turn in you're home free.
