    SH775 charging voltage too high?

I decided to tackle a low charging issue on my 78 GS750 today. I upgraded to the SH775 and the 1980+ 18 pole stator and rotor a few years back. I’m still running a conventional lead acid battery. I cleaned up the connections and now I’m getting 14.2 volts at the battery terminals at 5k rpm with the lights on and 14.5 volts with the lights off. I never ride with the headlight off but I’m wondering if I’m getting into battery boilover territory with these figures. Any ideas if this is too much?

Nope, that's about where it should be with that RR at that RPM mate.

To be honest with our climate I'd swap to an AGM asap. In the summer you'll end up topping up the battery monthly in my experience....

Please disregard. I just saw in the stator papers that up to 14.8 volts is good. I don’t think it’s possible for my charging system to get that high.

Awesome! Thanks salty! I think I’ll look into an agm as soon as my financial situation gets better. Any particular ones you recommend?

Motobatt or Deka EX15L are the two I like. The Motobatt I like slightly better. Last a few months longer in my experience & have 2 sets of terminals to connect to. I get about 5 years out of them but you can tell when they are starting to get weak...

AMG batteries are great, but if your regular battery is still good, I'd just run it.

that’s pretty a pretty good life on those. I think I’ll give those a shot once mine is finished. Thank you for the tip!

My lead acid battery is knocking on the door of 2.5 years old and it’s still going strong. I have no idea why this one is still going considering battery replacement has typically been an annual thing for me. At $35 a pop at pep boys I didn’t really think much of it. With pep boys being gone, I think I’ll see how long this battery can go and then make the switch to AGM.

I had good experiences with Motobatt but unfortunately I had a brand new lemon from them. I know it happens but that to me is just not a good sign...

Yep, the GS and the XJ both use the same size of Motobatt and the one I'm currently running in the GS is a good five years old by now, with no sign of giving up yet.

Practically every battery I saw in the '70's and '80's was a Yuasa, so I went with that for my 11E, and my Sporty came with one. (AGMs, of course.) Toss in a Sears DieHard charger, and 5 years should be no sweat.

Like John Gotti used to say, "I could do a nickel standing on my head."

As you say.. it happens. I haven't heard of another lemon but very limited experience (although they are well liked here & on ADVrider. The Deka seems to be more popular on the KLR sites but some using Motobatt there too )

I know, I really liked those yellow Motobatt's too and their alternative post configurations.. Advance Auto used to sell AGM's called Autocraft that said "Made in Virginia" and I still have one 8 years old that holds a charge a well of course now they no longer offer those... now they are Diehards which I hate cause guess where they are made....

For me I either get Shorai Lithiums, or Evercraft by "Johnson Controls" aka walmart lead acid batteries that you fill yourself always seem to get at least 5 years or more out of those things... I have yet to find a solid in-between after Motobatt scared me away with their lemon since that was my other "go to".

                            Edit:

My mates swear by Deka for all their boating needs, and they have a no fuss exchange policy too. I may try them out!!
