    Wrong ignitor on GS1100G?

    Hi,

Great forum, with a lot of useful information!

I bought a well used 83-GS1100G last week and I am having problems getting it to run properly. I think this may be connected to a possible wrong ignitor, the partnumber reads 32900-45110. I know it has been changed at some point because of the wiring (yellow and black from the signal generator are shorted).

As I understand from this thread, the pre ->81 GS' has mechanical advance and the 82-> has electronic advance. Which would probably explain the rough running?

Would appreciate if anyone can confirm this, before I go ahead and order a new Dynatek ignition.

If you switch to the dyna you'll need the mechanical advance mechanism from a pre82 GS. They're all the same. I have a few if you need. But it also just so happens I have a proper ignitor for your bike as well if you're interested.

Thanks for the offer and the quick reply. I thought that Dyna 2000 has electronic advance, eliminating the need for a mechanical advance?

That I don't know. I'd assume you're likely correct as afaik youcan set your advance curve with the 2000. But why pay for that when the dyna S is much cheaper and snap up a mechanical advance and it does exactly what it's supposed to do. Unless you're making a hot bike out of a shaftie?

You can use the ignitor you have along with a mechanical advance unit. Cheap fix. You also might want to pick up a used ignitor unit - the 850G and 1100G share the same part and they are not that hard to find (Josh has one as noted already). I'd go one of these ways, a Dyna 2000 is way expensive and overkill for your bike.
