    New Exhaust Preference

I'm getting ready to put a 4 into 1 exhaust on my '83GS 1100GL. I'm looking at Mac and Vance and Hines. I am not really looking for loud but can live with whatever I have to. Any opinions out there as to the relative quality of Mac vs Vance and Hines? I'm also not necessarily needing a performance boost. Just replacing an original exhaust with holes in both mufflers and slightly loose baffles. I'm considering the links below. Jim M

Vance and Hines makes a nice pipe.

    Mac = garbage.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping for, some strong opinions. The Mac says it leaves easy access to the oil filter and won't clash with the center stand. Now to figure out if the Vance and Hines can make the same claim.

The archives is full of information about different headers. The search function is a wonderful thing.

V&H does allow access to the drain and filter although some people remove it anyway because they don't feel like dumping oil on the pipes.

Previous owners installed a V&H 4:1 Megaphone on my 850G.

I was able to get in there and get the oil filter changed with out any major problems.

Was a little tight fit with the hands and had to make a bunch of short wrench turns on at least one of the nuts, but otherwise was quite pleased.

Oil, filter, and centerstand all OK, don't get the sidewinder pipe unless you are a serious NASCAR fan, you won't be able to turn right much.

The asking price seems close to retail,if the bids get close. If that is the case you may get free shipping from on-line store.Save the 50. shipping.Plus it would be brand new.
                Just a thought.

The retailer where I bought my V&H system was able to tell me about access to drain plug, oil filter and centerstand retention before I bought my system.
I hear some older V&H systems dont allow accress to oil filter/drain plug and/or dont allow retention of center stand.
I love my pipe sounds great, to keep it quiet you might want to repack it now and then.

One thing I've noticed is places like Dennis kirk don't list my model. They might say the pipes will fit an 1100L but not mention 1100GL. Is the only difference the shaft? The ebay players seem to adopt a "one size fits all" approach. They just say GS 1100 1980-1983.

I have a V & H street megaphone on my 1000. Very good pipe IMHO and not too loud until you get above 5000 RPM and then it has the nice "old school" sound. The OEM pipes for the 1000GL & 1100GL are the same. As I recall the part number was V12001-G but I would call or e-mail V & H tech support to verify that number is correct. I called before I got mine and the tech support was very good, they said I would be able to get to the oil filter cover, drain plug and retain the center stand which is correct on mine. I did have to fabricate a muffler hanger, the rear tab was about 1" - 2" off from being a direct bolt on but it went on pretty easily.

You should look around for pricing, Dennis Kirk has them for $291.00 and shipping might be free. Typical eBay overpriced stunt.

Yeah, Vance and Hines said the model # for the GL is V12001G which is discontinued. Ebay sellers are saying the V12001 will work but most online vendors don't show a pipe for the GL. They show the V12001 but don't list the GL as a model it will fit although I think it might.

It will fit the ports in the head, you just might have to fabricate a rear bracket. Easy stuff.

I have the V & H chrome 4-1 megaphone exhaust on my GS1100ESD and was able to retain my center stand. I was not able to do so with my prior exhaust which was the V & H black Sport exhaust system which also covered the drain plug.

Here is the web site where I got my current 4-1 exhaust.
