    Nice find Don!

The 450 one is also on top like the 550, but I don't recall ever having problems shifiting into neutral on mine, but it's been almost 9 years since I rode it...

I'll keep this thread in mind though and will upgrade the spring if I have difficulty once it's back together. At least with it on top like that it will be fairly straight forward.

Could you shim the stock spring? That would give you a use for those left-over RadioShack washers not used to shim the carb needles.

NO. I wouldn't try that as things are pretty tight in there (not much space).

If you have no trouble finding neutral then don't worry about this mod, but if you do then the first thing to do is go check microfiches for different models and see which model has a spring with a different part number to the one on your own bike.

Lucky for me I had a 650 bottom end sitting in the shed. The spring should not be that expensive, buy a 650 spring and see how it compares to the spring in your motor. Or pull your spring out and go to a spring place and get one a bit heavier and stronger. The advantage of this mod is that if you don't like the end result then go back to the way it was and it takes about 5mins. to do.

Particularly on the 450 and 550 motors. Don't even need to drain the oil to do it.

            Microfiche Information

I just did a search on my microfiche information on the two type of springs.

The spring that was in my '77 GS550B was also in these other models of Suzukis.

Also another piece of invaluable information is that this stronger spring only appeared on Suzukis from 1980, all earlier models will have a different spring to this one.

All the 550s and 750s from the '70s used the earlier (weaker) spring, so it looks like the spring was upgraded by Suzuki for models after 1980.

              Just a thought.

Could this mod cause a "lazy shifter" to miss second gear on up shifts and first on down shifts more often?

Though it shouldn't take long to develope the right technique.

I am having a real problem finding neutral. I have a 94 gs1100gk. I know this is an old thread, but anyone know where I can find a replacement spring for one that would be better than stock on the gs1100gk? If I break at a light in 1st, there is no way to get into neutral. Most times I have to rock it into second and then down to neutral. (this works only sometimes)

Yeah, I've had many of the bikes with the "better" spring, and had problems finding neutral, especially when the bike was hot after a good lashing
What to do then? Perhaps if someone could get the wire gauge, OAL, and compressed length and required pressure, or at least part of those, we could source a better, newer spring altogether?

And, I'd always wondered WTF that little tower sticking up on the smaller fours was...now I know!

As the clutch springs age they loose free length and periodically need to be replaced. New stock springs have enough clamping force for a stock bike, so there is no need to go with anything stiffer.

As for difficulty with finding neutral is concern, first thing to try is reducing the amount of clutch lever free play (tighten the cable), thus increase how far the clutch disengages. If this doesn't work you may need new clutch plates. My second GS1000 had difficulty finding neutral from a stop, but replacing the clutch discs resolved the problem. If you go this route, replace both the steel and friction discs, or at least measure the steel discs to make sure they are flat. Even a small amount of warp can make the clutch drag enough to make finding neutral difficult.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Spings steel in any configuration, over time, can and will take a "set". One possible mod would to maybe add a steel disc spacer or washer atop the spring between the plug nut?? Yes???

Only if you know there is enough travel left in the spring so that it won't bind.

                          Don doesn't recommend it above...

Never needed to replace this spring myself.

I got a few that whether moving or not, finding neutral is a gentle exercise of the toe..too much and it skips right up to second...or skips down to first if too much downward pressure...this my be my fix. I knew the spring and plinger were there but till now never connected the dots thinking about the sensitivity of the shifters.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Don, what's your long-term impression of the spring mod? I'm tempted to try it on my '79 GS550E.

That's crazy, my 78 750 is hard to hit N, but my 82 650 is Easy, just like the chart says!

Like the other guy said, you gotta "toe" it just right....
