GS450 Ignitor-Is there an aftermarket unit?

    Hello,
I need a new ingnitor, and ebay is barren. An OEM part Is 500 bucks, is there any other alternative? Could an igntor form a different gs work? Thanks

As far as I know, only the 1980-1981 GS250, 1980-1982 GS450 and 1980 GS550L will bolt right up. You might be able to modify an igniter from a different model GS and make it work on your GS450.

The only aftermarket part that I know of is Boyer-Brandsen. They're a company in Europe and I think that their kit costs around $300. Send them an email and ask to make sure.
    Boyer Bransden, Electronics, Electronic Ignition,

Dyna might make it but I am not sure.

Before you try installing your new unit, I recommend checking EVERYTHING electrical on your bike. This isn't the first time it has happened to you. I guarantee you that it WILL happen again unless you do something about it.

If I were you, I'd just make a brand new wiring harness from scratch with brand new electrical connectors. Use spades. Brand new wiring and brand new electrical connectors will eliminate any suspicions towards the wiring harness...

Then check the components. Check the ignition coils (upgrade to Dyna?) and upgrade your R/R if you haven't done so.

It might be a bit anal but I'm just saying that that's what I would do.

    Good luck!

I remember searching for an igniter... Everyday, I would type this into eBay's search bar.
      • GS250 igniter
      • GS250 ignitor
      • GS250 cdi

Then do the same with the GS450 and GS550. Some people spell differently and some put cdi in it.

You may be interested in these.

Sounds like GOOD advice to me.

You may be able to convert a DYNA S. Make some enquiries. They are only $133 a set from Z1.

You may be right. Don't they make a Dyna igniton for the 1980 GS550? According to the parts fiche, they are the same as the GS450's igniter. So that might work too.

Be sure to check out Pete's thread!

            Thanks!!!!
those ignitors didn't come up when I searched so thanks alot for the links.
I emailed dyna and they said there wasnt a unit for the gs450. It looked like they only had 4 cycle units, is it possible it work for a 2 cylinder bike?
I made the mistake of getting a used R/R last time my ignitor blew, but i finally learned my lesson. Ill definitely get an upgraded one this time, where can I find one?
            Thanks again for the help!

Just for completeness, according to the Dynatek web site, the DS3-3C for $US309.99 is listed as "Dyna S Ignition System for Suzuki GS 400 Twin w/ Coils".

I'm guessing this means it'll be ok for the 450's, but you'd need to confirm with Dynatek.

Note it appears using it with the OEM coils is not an option which is why it's more expensive than the others as it comes with the coils.

The above would be better than buying an OEM $500 one if it works or could be adapted to a GS450.

Maybe you want to check here too. This guy is parting out a GS450.
Have a full GS450 I acquired, it is almost fully torn down. Nice set of clean carbs http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300574770366 They're listed for $99 on ebay, but I'll sell them for $75 to anyone from DTT. Frame with a clear title - $30 + Ship Really nice...

I emailed dyna to see if the set for the GS400 would work and they said no

Really? That's weird! Did they tell you what 400 twins it's designed for? Maybe it's designed as a points replacement for the early twins before they put electronic ignition in? If so, it should be compatible...

I always found that odd (seems like it should work but Dyna only lists the 400), but figured we'd have to wait until someone was willing to shell out the $300 to get a firm answer.

Pete, how has your ignition project worked out?

Yeah it is rather odd, might be worth an email to find out what model it's actually designed to fit and then do some theoretical reverse engineering. It's an expensive test otherwise

I'll have an update on my ignition on 13th August which is when I'll get the opportunity to kick her over again. New exhaust, have the K&N's mounted, and a new multimeter with dwell angle measurement all set to go, just gotta finish up how to connect a battery to the relocated electrics.

Ok, just emailed to ask what model and year 400's it's designed for, wait and see what they say I guess...

Indeed, no reply yet but I have no idea what time of the night/day it is or how fast/slow they respond to emails... maybe they'll just ignore the Aussie idiot? haha
