What else uses fuel on my 650?

oh boy, i'm an idiot. that was indeed the overflow hose and it's not attached to the petcock. where is it supposed to go?

the 82 does have a fuel gauge.

It attaches to the spigot on the right underside of the tank. It's pretty obvious where it attaches there. I don't actually have one installed at the moment, so I'm not sure how you will want to route it, but eventually it is going to come out somewhere on the swingarm, where your air filter drain hose goes.

There is a diagram of the hose and cable routings somewhere deep in the service manual.
