Cafe/commute conversion: Speedometer and cables, for 79 GS1000L

    Hey guys,
I am turning my 79 GS1000L into a cafe/commuter and have a few questions and wanted to ask for wisdom from the experienced users here.
    1. I replaced the stock bars with smaller ones and now the cables are too long for the controls, the clutch and throttle now engage differently which I think is due to a kink in the lines. The covers and lines themselves are pretty old anyways. Is it a generic replacement for shorter lines or can I cut them?
    2. The original gauges don't really work and now that the bike is running smoothly, it's pretty nerve racking to not know how fast I'm going on the freeway. Would something like the $70 mini-speedometer on this page work for me?

And if so, how complicated is the install? I would most likely pay someone to do it as I tend to break more than I fix when I attempt to do work myself
thanks for the help for a noob. I can post pics if that's helpful (and I will when I get more done)
