    Kz 650b1..austin moto fest auction bike

    Frank Z. came up to the storage shed and we got busy disassembling the bike for her make over. The bike was manufactured in July 1976..so I am saying its one of the very early KZ 650s?

    Anyway, here is Frank and his road dog Biscuit. There are gonna be a few posts before I have them all uploaded. I did bring the carbs home and got them taken apart with the aid of a propane torch to soften the shellac from the slides so I could extract them.

      Got the carbs broke down..here is what they looked like when i took off the bowls...YUMMY!!! And the engine is on the bench. All thats left is the rolling chassis.

        Got a little done on the carbs this afternoon. Got all the internals cleaned and all holes poked. Put the carb bodies and bowls into the Berrymans. I am thinking a MINIMUM of 48 hrs soaking to be sure the juice has adequate time to get thru all the passages and dissolve this crud.

          Got a little work done on the carbs today. Got some poilishing of the bodies and bowls started. I will post pics soon as I get them all done and back on the rack. Orings from Cycleorings.com should be here early this week.

            Jeez..was that thing parked on the surface of Mars or something..? That's some serious sun damage.. Pretty good bones for a restoration, though. Looks like it's all there.

            Got your PM about the paint, Chuck. You might be able to replicate that color very closely with a single stage color and clear coat. Check Ford Mustangs in the mid 90's..that looks like one of the colors they might've used. Maybe a "Patriot Red" from Chryslers of the early 2000's, too. Any red is going to be pricey. Reds are "the" most expensive pigments to make.

              I was thinking along the lines of a single stage and clear too Larry. Theres an auto paint supply house about 5 blocks away from the front door.

              Theres lots of real nice paint on the bottom of the tank and where the seat hid it from the Texas furnace. Maybe IF they have the scanner kit I might be able to get a read from one of those spots.

                Finished cleaming up the carb bodies today. Still no orings in the box, so I decided to polish all the bolts and engine mounting bolts. Also got a start on rehabbing the engine covers. Here is the before and after of the sprocket cover. I did the clutch adjustment cover as well but didnt take a picture of it.

                  Another UJM on its way to being awesome again. I love it.

                  Great job on that sprocket cover. I'd love to learn how to do that someday.

                    It got some pitting. I am pondering a resand or just let it be as is...That was an hour and half to get it that good.

                      Got the carbs all rebuilt. New Robert Barr orings and all nicely cleaned.

                        Nice work there, Chuck. Hard to believe these came from the same bike.
                        ( btw: All info i've found online suggests 23mm (+/- 1mm) float height using dry method. Not sure where Haynes manual got their 30mm info )

                            The bodies look a bit grayer in the pics than they do in person...in any case they sure are nicer..HA HA.

                            Everything on this bike needs stripped and redone..and I mean everything!!

                              Petcock dipped for 48 HRS and fully disassembled and cleaned. New orings throughout. The filter screen was so brittle it just crumbled, but they sell them new on Ebay. Gotta get the new filter and the base oring still.
