    1982 GS450 Rear Shocks Disassembly

If this has already been discussed, please point me in the right direction. If not, please chime in with your expertise

I would like to take the shocks out of the springs on my rear suspension to brush the springs and paint the shocks. How would one go about doing that??

      Got them apart

      Now......complete newbie question to follow.....

When I push the rod into the shock, shouldn't there be a good deal of resistance and then it should push back out?

Mine has little resistance and then stays in

Yes there should be resistance and some rebound. The seals are probably shot.
What bike and are they the stock shocks?
No sense in rebuilding if they are stock.

They are stock. They are on an 82 450TX

the common consensus is that the stock shocks were pretty blah day one...30 years later they are definitely junk. dont bother. buy new shocks. Hagons and Progressive shocks both can come in black with black or chrome springs.

I put Progressive 412HD on my 450...huge difference.
