I recently bought by first bike(83 GS 550L) off a friend in ok running condition and have been planning to make a project out of it. Then this weekend I stumble across a 83 GS 550E parts bike that was in great shape except the guy said the transmission had locked up and he had torn it apart(It is now is a bucket of pieces). I picked the bike up and my plan it to try and do an engine swap from the L over to the E then see if I can get the old E engine fixed and if not part the L out.
My question is does anyone know what all parts need changed to make the L engine work on the E? As far as I can tell if I will need to swap keep the carbs and exhaust from the old engine as well as the sprocket on the transmission. The E has an oil cooler which I am thinking from the part drawings is all contained in the oil pan. Can any one confirm this? Other than that is there anything else that I am going to run in to as an issue with doing the swap?
