        Both work as intended. Stumped.

Thanks for the help so far. The armature case was upside down however the starter still turns the same way. All I can do is assemble and try again.

Thinking a little more the starter has to turn clockwise. Only other thing is the brush plate is upside down. Can’t think of anything else. I’ll look at the pictures I took.

You can remove the lead FROM the selinoid that leads TO the starter to test if the pressing of the button triggers the selinoid or not.

                Bingo Baby! CW.

If you get into your starter take pictures. So....

The brush plate can only go one way. Manual shows different. It’s wrong, can’t go that way. Make certain the tab on the plate is lined up with the tab in end cap. This lines up the long screws.

The armature case is the key. If it’s off spins CCW. You have to line the indents of the case with the magnets. See pic on bottom of starter.

I did some searching and read where this will happen if it’s off. Make marks, take pictures. I’m pretty good with starter repair. Four times total. Please, don’t send me yours.

CW as in from the rear of the motor? In other words, if you are looking straight at the spline side it runs CCW right?

Right now the starter spins CW. Had it CCW.

Looking at the pic you can see the gear. This gear spins freely CW. Has resistance CCW.

I had it CCW and it just spun. Parayliss by analysis.

When the starter spins CW it drives the gear in the case CCW thus turning motor over.

Please tell me I’m not crazy.

Bike turns over but slow. Like something is tight. Battery new.

Thinking this starter is shot. I did adjust the cam tensioner but could do it again.

                        [sigh]

Is there an adjustment in the black wheel on right of tensioner? Didn’t read anything on that.

Yes it has to spin the gear in the hole you took a picture of CCW from where you took the picture. looking at the starter motor from the same perspective it should go CW

Well now you know the starter motor is turning the gears correctly at least. The battery can show 12 volts but not produce a lot of cranking amps. I would have the battery load tested first.

Chuck, I’m thinking cam tensioner to tight. Well, all morning on this. Lunchtime already.

Take a break and step away.

Hard to see the tentioner is to tight unless you have not followed the service manual.
there is an exelent tutorial see http://www.bwringer.com/gs/camchaintens.html
