    1980 suzuki gs1000st wes cooley

    hi everyone...

    i have the bike above.

    i have some clutch noise that doesn't affect the running of the clutch / bike.

    the noise disappears once i rev the engine or pull in the clutch.

    im assuming the problem is the clutch springs....that are shown as number 13 in bottom right hand corner,
    in the provided diagram from my suzuki manual.
    apparently its common on these, even if the clutch is good...

    the question is: how is this fixable ?
    i've heard people use shims......but shims, where exactly?

    or is there another way?

      Majority of GS1000 2 valve motors like your GS1000S develop this symptom with miles. It's called clutch hub rattle and does not hurt anything and the springs are not the cause. Certainly not an endearing noise, reams of threads have been written and you will have to rebuild the clutch hub if you cannot live with it.

        Check that the hub nut isnt loose. That and the springs being loose at the rear of the hub. Remove hub and see if any springs wiggle.

            You must know that there is a small rubber piece behind the clutch basket that acts as a cushion as you engage or disengage the gears.
            The helical gears create a lateral movement of the clutch hub and at idle it can rattle left to right.
            This rubber piece becomes hard and doesn't play its role anymore over time.
            Sometimes it's totally worn out and you won't even notice it's there!

                  Is this problem in anyway associated with the hub nut that comes loose? It sounds like a different problem, just asking.

                      I first replaced the little rubber #2, reassembled still had the rattle. Then replaced the clutch hub nut, torqued to spec and still had the rattle. Finally sent the clutch basket to Falcon, they welded the rivets and my rattle went away. If you can fix your clutch hub rattle with the rubber damper that is the most cost effective route.
