1978 GS1000 wont rev over 4000 rpm under load

I recently purchased a 78 gs1000 and it revs to 8k rpm no problem at idle and sounds beautiful but when you get to riding it it loses power/bogs/sputter at around 40mph and only gets to 60mph. The carbs have been cleaned and rebuilt and the petcock was cleaned out. The only other problem on the bike is the gas tank leaks but that can be fixed.

    Your 1st post?

    Go here http://gsarchive.bwringer.com/

Get your self a factory manual and read the VM carb cleaning tutorial. If the cleaning steps aren't followed, your carbs probably aren't clean

Then, tell us - stock airbox or pods? Stock exhaust or 4-1 or? Valves adjusted? Still have points?

Could be several different things. Did it run okay after doing the carbs and petcock? Gas tank vent, air filter blockage, air leaks, vacuum leaks, ignition, charging system. I had the same issue and it was carb tuning. What’s the starting point?
