    1980 gs1000e what carbs should be fitted as standard

    Hi I have a 1980 Gs1000E with the prime only petcock(the dreaded petcock) just wondering which carbs should be fitted to this model as standard, Should they be VM or CV carbs, thanks37522933_10156489360847618_3391650367010766848_n_kindlephoto-3896833.jpg

    If it's definitely a 1980 model, you should have CV carbs.

    There is sometimes confusion about how to designate a particular bike. The year of first registration is irrelevant, as the bike could have stood in a dealer's showroom for three years before being sold. The 'model year' is what is important, and Suzuki's model year ran from late autumn/winter onward - not a calendar year. So it was quite possible to buy, say, a 1980 model in late '79.

    I don't know enough about GS1000s to tell from your pic whether you have a 1980 with '79 carbs, or a 1979 with an '80 fuel tap. Plenty of others here who will know, and if you could post bigger pics, that would be great.

      Yeah it's actually registered as a 1981 bike, But as I read the petcock was changed to the Slotted one in 1980, so to avoid confusion (or to confuse) I just state it as a 1980 bike, I think I have the correct carbs fitted it as you stated they should be cv Carbs, these are the carbs fitted in the attached photo,I need new intake boots that's why I asked the question, wasn't sure which ones I needed, Thanks for replyings-l1600 (2).jpg

        That photo shows VM carbs. Last used on 1979 model year GS bikes (in the USA anyway.)

          Ahh I must have the Wrong carbs fitted ! The bike runs well, Just after intake boots as they're showing signs of a slight seeping of fuel, I take it if they work their ok on my bike ?

              Thoes are not vm29s. They are stock type 26s that use a remote choke linkage.

                Are you talking about the bike picture, or the stock photo? I agree the stock photo is delinately 26's. But its hard to tell from the bike pic.

                  So many mixes and matches possible over the years. It's quite possible a PO used a 79 head and the VM carbs that go with it. Your slotted discs speak of a 1980+ bike, but if the engine has a kickstart that makes it pre-80. The awkward petcock dates the tank fairly firmly, as the bolt spacing is peculiar to that one, afaik.
                  Dating individual components is only of some use in determining the actual year of the bike.

                    Truly a "Mutt", but tastefully done. Looks like some time and money went into her, that is why I suspect upgraded carbs.

                      Those carbs are correct for that head. The heads for CV carbs. used an intake boot that mounted with a clamp, the boot for the VM carbs mounted with bolts & an "O" ring, like the one on your bike. Also I never remember a kick starter on any GS1000. Just my opinion.

                        Woooh, wait, Maybe the 16 valve heads used the clamp type intake boots, the 8 valve heads may have still used the boots with the bolts & "O" rings.

                          Argh now you've got me all confused ! No kick start, 1980 petcock with slot no lever, so by the sounds of it I have a different head on it, atleast I now know I need Intake boots for VM 26 carbs, Thanks for all the replies, oh and she rides beautiful too !
