82 GS650E Clean up, repairs, parts supplies and information.

    , Screenshot_2020-12-28 Suzuki GS 650E 1982 Trade Me Motors.jpg

I'll use this thread as a build thread. Not that the bike needs restoring or is a barn find to be rebuilt, but an 82 GS650E with low kilometers, (13300), and in good, condition.
    Link to my introduction
Use this forum to tell everyone the details about the GS that you own and a little about yourself as well.

I will, and am, doing a lot of research specifically for the 650E, (seems to be a bit of a middle model), and already i am amassing questions that, i'm sure are buried in the site), relating to the interchangeability between the GS550E and the GS650E as the 550E seems to be the basis of the 650E especially the engine............Any corrections or added information is welcome............

It is 38 Years old and hasn't had the Reg/Rect changed, (as told to me by the PO who doesn't know and wasn't mechanically minded so never worked on the bike herself), so that will be one of the first things i look at.

Have found a few threads, (advance search), on the 650E and am in the process of downloading, and or bookmarking any information i can find out through, this site, BikeCliffs website, (Manuals or PDF's), (great site and a big thanks Cliff Saunders), that relate to the 650E and internet searches for road tests or reviews. ......I will post up links to any and all information i find, or not found on here, into this thread.

Because i have less sense than money, which i have none of either so that makes my sense even less, i bought this bike in NZ and intend to keep it over there for when i visit. (Covid willing). Because the seller lived close to where my son lived it made the deal workable so the bike will reside at my sons house.

aside from the Reg/rect and testing the stater and charging system in general i will go through the whole loom, couplings bullet connectors, grounds and switches, doing a continuity test of the whole loom and fixing any corrosion or connectors, (pins), that may be heat damaged or just brittle and may be disintegrating.................any suggestions of trouble areas in the loom most welcome.

I know you guys point us newbies to the search and encourage us to learn for yourself and i am all for it...........

What i am after is the Vin no's for the GS650E models and the countries this model was available in...........so far all i have found out is it was for the US and Canadian market.

    the journey begins.......

Can any one explain why in 81 and 82 there are 2 different cylinder head no's for each of the models

      81-GS650E.... Part no - 11100-34810.....F,NO 103560
      81-GS650E.... Part no - 11100-34210.....F,NO 103561

      81-GS650G.....Part no - 11100-34810.....F,NO 103560
      81-GS650G.....Part no - 11100-34210.....F,NO 103561

      81-GS650GL....Part no - 11100-34810.....F,NO 103560
      81-GS650GL....Part no - 11100-34210.....F,NO 103561

Same in 82 uses the same part nos as above but the F,NO's are different, (assume F,NO is the engine Vin no).

Then in 83 the cylinder head part no changes, and there is not 2 F,NO's

Not certain on this, as I've never owned a 650, but IIRC, Suzuki added an extra bolt to the valve cover, at the forward end of the camchain tunnel area.

Update o the bike. Have received it but now having problems. The garage that did the WOF, (warrant of fitness), gave the bike a pass. I have since found rust holes in the mufflers, not large but under New Zealand regulations, it would disqualify it from being on the road until they were fixed.

Been in contact with the garage and sent them photos, and they admit the mistake and are sending someone out to visually have a look. from there things may get messy..........i don't want to spend anymore on the bike.........the owner thinks the bike was passed to be on the road, so won't want to compensate me........the garage, (and area where the bike was sold from) Where the bike was taken to have the WOF done is about a 2 1/2 hours drive, so i'm not prepared to spend money on getting it there and back again either..........The fun starts.

Other than that it is all pretty good

Been almost a year............Covid has stuffed it up.

Cant get back to NZ and it doesn't look like the Trans Tasman boarders are going to open up in the foreseeable future. Things were looking good and the boarders were open in a fashion but then Australia let delta get away and now with the new variant has taken over, Oz Gov't has raised their hands and said we are all going to get it, wear a mask to slow the spread..........

NZ has contained Delta and has opened up themselves locally and boarders are basically shut for trips home.

Now i'm deciding if i should keep the bike. Maybe sell it, or could see about shipping it over here......Don't know if its worth the cost???

Good news, Kiwi Boarders will open up to Expat Kiwis from July. No quarantine requirements if fully vaccinated.

Only 5 months to go and will decide what to do with the GS650Ez when i go over. Plan on a 3 week holiday and will do a few tips, (weather permitting), will be cold wet and frosty. Frosty nights mean good weather days.

For those that may be interested i have coloured up a couple of 82/83 GS650Ez/Ed/G/GT wiring diagrams. check out my albums and if anyone wants one PM me so i can get a full sized diagram to you. Will need to use an email as these are quite large

Its been awhile since I posted, Still alive, well when I look in the mirror I see life but not as I have known it............ Been almost 2 years since I bought this bike and still haven't seen it in person yet alone ridden it. Now all travel restrictions and covid requirement between Aus and NZ have been lifted, covid cases are on the way down after our winters peak, I'm semi retiring and going on the pension and taking a trip to NZ to see my Grandchildren and get the bike on the road and do a couple of trips on it while i am over there.

Starting to get excited...........67 more sleeps and countdown.

Got a 2005 DL650 I will be riding to Brisbane, (1300 klm), taking 3 days, spend a week with my Daughter, her Husband and see my grandchildren, (3), then NZ for 3.5 weeks and back to Brissy for a week and another 3 days, or 4 riding back up to FNQ.

Another Pic of the bike and its stable mate. My x XS650 that my son has claimed.

Got to NZ. Seen the bike in person for the first time. Been stored in a good shed, carpet on the floor, bike lathered in Lanolin oil and covered with a removal blanket and painters drop cloth. Spent 2 hours going over most of he bike with WD40 to wipe off the lanolin oil before taking it outside to take a pic or 2.

                  Wine country.

Stater wasn't charging I bought a stater and new Reg/Rect before getting to NZ. Reg/Rect arrived the day before me. Kane, (my son whose place I'm staying at) worked on replacing the charging System together. We don't get a chance to work on bike together due to the distance between Au and NZ and we had a great day. Kane ha my Yamaha 83 XS650 SK. He is making it hi own, painting and adding his style to it.

First ride around the block with his helmet. spent the best part of 5min, (felt like 5 min), trying to undo the clasp......Pic to prove it...........Dam clip in latches are child proof, lol

In NZ, when not using the vehicles the registration can be put on hold for 12 months. Any time in the 12 month period it can be registered for 3, 6, 9 moths, or longer, then when/if the vehicle isn't being used it can go back on hold. Bike i now 40 years old, registration has gone from $550.00 per year to $59.00.

Every 6 months vehicles have to be given a safety certificate. My bike has some holes in the muffler so i wouldn't pass the safety certificate but we are out of town a bit and i am sneaking around the back roads.

second ride Christmas day. Grape growing region and every spare piece of land has got grape vines on it.

Found some poppies I thought would make a good backdrop to the GS650E. 27-12-22.
