    GS850 No carbs

I have a GS850, I need carbs (4). Which carbs will fit this model of bike? Not looking for originals for now, just some to make it run right now. Low budget. Anybody know what will work on my bike?

    Thanks.

What year? There were different carbs in '79 than in the other years.

I got a rack off a 1982 gs850....I dismantled and checked for damage..none found...reinstalled stuff loosely. Would need proper cleaning and new o-rings.
        $200 shipped

I have not ridden a motorcycle since I was a teenager. So this is all new to me. I am from Texas and work in the IT field. This will be a challenging project but well worth all the effort, after all it's a Suzuki.

          Thanks, Dee
Relative to your request for carbs; Will need to verify the year. 78-79 carbs different than 80 and after. And choke (enricher actually) is different 82 and after (but may not effect that actaull carbs).

Engine have kickstart? (yes =78-79) (no => 80)

Choke (enricher) in center of bars? (yes <= 81) On left grip? (yes => 82)

Could also discuss if is worth any expense/effort if "no title", but you are not asking about that.

I am not quite sure, I bought the bike without a title. The number on the engine is GS850-136413 My guess is that it is an 81.

does it have a 17 digit VIN on the steering head? If yes its at least an 80. the 10th digit in the vin should be the year.

It does not have a kickstart. Choke is located in the center of the bars. No title but couldn't pass it up for the $75 I paid for it. Thanks for the information you provided. I was told that it had Mikuni carbs on it.

No, it does not have a 17 digit VIN. I tried to find out what year it was through the VIN number but had no luck.

So its pre 80..thats a start. Thus its a 79 G model. 78 didnt have 850s and any 80 or newer bike would have a standard 17 digit VIN. Most likely VM26 carbs.

This indicated it's a 1980 or later as Redman stated.

If money is tight these carbs could be made to work. There is a small chunk broke out of the inlet side of one carb but if you are handy a piece of aluminum can be sculpted and epoxied in place.

80 or newer should have the standardized 17 digit VIN...yes? My reasoning above may be flawed???? 79 frame with an 80 engine maybe????

Also look for the frame number on the steeringneck. (will be different than engine number).
Stamped in steering neck on one side.
And a metal foil tag on other side, but often is missing or unreadable. Also has manufacture date (not to be confused with model yeaar).

As others have confirmed, no kickstart equals 1980 and after, and larger stator and electronic pickup (not points), and CV carbs (big diaphram on top).
Choke in center equals 1982 and after.
                          Yes, Mikuni.
Oh, and 850G carbs same as 850GL carbs.

                            Confirmation time.

No kickstart and no 17-digit VIN narrows it down to a 1980 model year.

The kick starter was only in the 1979 models, which are also the only 850s that had the VM carbs and points. The VM carbs used smaller-diameter ports in the head.

The 17-digit VIN started with the 1981 models. There was a plate on the front of the steering neck that would show the VIN, as well as a letter code for the year and the date of manufacture. The letter code for the '80 bikes was "T". Note that the production run for the '80 models might have started as early as August or September of '79 and run through July of '80.

Yep, OP ILMotos has yet to report on if the frame number is in VIN format.

But as far as the carbs, he is asking about, we know is 80 or later (no kickstart). I am not certain if we need to know if 82 and later (says has choke on center of bars).
