IF IT WERE ME........ I would take the head off, inspect for bent valves, and reset the cams. ALSO if you look at each shim bucket with the cam lobe facing up from the bucket you should see a lot of gap between the cam and the bucket if a valves bent...they tend to not let the bucket come all the way up like normal.

When you say "reset the cams," do you mean to take them out and redo them in the same way, according to the manual?

It sounds like you're missing compression, you shouldn't be able to keep the spark plug hole closed with your thumb (given a compression stroke).

To be sure, you can borrow a compression tester (or buy a cheapo one, should be sufficient).

The hissing noise usually is a cylinder sucking in air, so given your reply re. the notches one could assume that your cams are at least close to correct timing.

Yes...by reset i mean reinstall them after checking things out in the head ( bent valves or damaged valve seats ). Following the manuals directions of course.

Just got the head gasket today (was supposed to arrive on the 16th). When daylight comes, I'll head outside and put it on.

LOOK VERY CLOSELY at all the shims when you first remove the cams. Look for any that arent as far up as the others. Then look real close at the valves where the meet the seats for ANYTHING unusual.

The best test to direct you to where the problems are is a Leak Down Test.
Look it up. Not hard to do

Got the head off, none of the valves look bent. I'd post a picture, but again, it keeps saying "failed."

There's another problem. One of the cylinder head bolts is misaligned. It doesn't sit evenly with the other one next to it. It's the pair in between #3 and #4. 16161028230708070189759009663240.jpg

As long as the cylinders and the head set on the dowels it doesnt matter. Be sure all the dowels are there and out it together. AS for as far as the up and down goes you can double nut the stud and remove it. Then loctite it in at the right depth and bream the nuts loose. You can hold the stud with vice grips in the skinny area to remove the nuts.

The problem is the nut. It doesn't want to tighten. I believe it reaches the end of the thread before it fully tightens enough to hold the head down.

All the others are the proper length. Just this one.
